Goals & Objectives
Cleaner Roads. Stronger Communities. A Greener Shore.

Awareness
Use of media, signage, and literature to put the anti-litter campaign at the forefront of County initiatives.

Education
School programs and business platforms to teach everyone the harmful effects of litter on our waterways, wildlife and public health and safety.

Enforcement
Use of vigilance to sustain campaign efforts and foster a clean and healthy environment.

Sustainability
Encourage the use of recyclables and products that are earth-friendly.

Founders & Officers
In 2006, Citizens for a Better Eastern Shore (CBES) began a Recycling Committee to focus on recycling on the Shore, including creating the iconic red “Recycling” cans for special events, led by CBES then-President Paul Driscoll and then-Board members Betsy Pinder and Errin Sullivan.
By 2009, Jenny O’Neill had joined the group, which officially became Waste Watchers of the Eastern Shore, as a “grass roots community group to promote responsible disposal of waste.” Jenny served as Waste Watchers’ first president.
Early efforts by Waste Watchers included:
- Recycling at special events, including teaming up with The Nature Conservancy to recycle oyster and clam shells
- Reviving Food Lion’s program to recycle plastic bags and adding the program for Accomack County convenience centers
- Promoting “Did You Remember Your Bag?” signs for grocery store parking lots
- Writing the “Trash Talk” column.
- Organizing citizen “eco-walks” to pick up litter as they hike
- Community meetings on litter and recycling

We teach kids to look both ways before crossing.
Let’s teach them to look after the roads too—by setting the example first.
